I grew up on tereré.
My parents immigrated from Paraguay to NYC in the 80s. They became American citizens, built a life here, and raised me on the traditions they brought with them. Tereré, the icy pour of water over yerba mate in a guampa, sipped slowly through a bombilla, passed around the table until the thermos runs dry, was always one of them.
My family carries Paraguay with us everywhere. The language, the food, the ritual of sharing tereré in the afternoon heat.
Tere is my bet that the best afternoon drink on earth shouldn't stay a secret. We're bottling the feeling, not the ceremony. The ritual stays in the guampa. This is tereré for everyone else.
